Safe & Strategic Tree and Plant Removal Service in Richmond, VA

Specialized removal for hazardous, unwanted, or dying trees in the Richmond Metro area.

Removing a tree is a major decision for any homeowner. While we always aim to preserve the canopy, sometimes removal is the only responsible choice. Whether you have a dying Oak threatening your roof, a Pine leaning dangerously over a fence, or overgrown shrubs blocking your view, Cambium Tree offers a safe, zero-impact solution.

Led by Brian Greene, an ISA Certified Arborist, we specialize in "tight-quarter" removals. Richmond’s historic neighborhoods (like The Fan and Museum District) often have narrow access and delicate landscaping. We have the specific rigging equipment and crane expertise to dismantle trees piece-by-piece without touching a single shingle on your home.

Strategic Removal vs. Emergency Removal

To better serve you, we distinguish between two types of service:

  • Routine/Strategic Removal: Planned removal of standing trees that are dead, diseased, obstructing construction, or aesthetically unpleasing.

  • Emergency Service: Immediate response for trees that have already fallen or are actively failing due to a storm. (See our Emergency Tree Removal page).

When Is Tree Removal Necessary?

As arborists, we love trees—but we prioritize safety. Here are the most common reasons we recommend removal in Richmond:

  • Dead or Dying Timber: Trees compromised by rot, root decay, or pests (like the Emerald Ash Borer decimation in Virginia) become "standing liabilities."

  • Structural Instability: Trees with a significant lean toward a structure, or those with a "co-dominant" stem (V-crotch) that is splitting.

  • Construction & Renovation: Clearing land for a home addition, pool, or new driveway.

  • Overcrowding: Removing smaller trees to allow your larger, healthier specimen trees to thrive.

Our "Zero-Impact" Removal Process

We treat your yard like it’s our own. Our goal is to leave no trace behind other than the missing tree.

1. Hazard Assessment & Planning

Every removal starts with a plan. We identify obstacles (power lines, fences, septic tanks) and determine the safest felling method.

2. Precision Dismantling (Rigging & Cranes)

In open spaces, we can fell a tree whole. However, in most Richmond backyards, we climb and "chunk down" the tree. We use ropes and pulleys (rigging) or cranes to lower heavy logs gently to the ground, preventing craters in your lawn.

3. Plant & Shrub Clearing

We don't just handle massive Oaks. We also remove:

  • Overgrown hedges and Boxwoods.

  • Invasive species (like Bamboo or English Ivy).

  • Large shrubs damaging foundations. We ensure the entire root ball is extracted so the plant does not grow back.

4. Debris Removal & Cleanup

We chip the brush and haul away the logs. Our crew is known for meticulous raking and blowing off hardscapes. Note: Stump grinding is a separate service usually performed after the removal.

Do I Need a Permit to Remove a Tree in Richmond?

This is a critical question.

  • Private Property: Generally, you do not need a permit to remove a tree in your own backyard in Henrico, Chesterfield, or Hanover.

  • City Trees: You cannot touch a tree in the city right-of-way (between the sidewalk and street).

  • Historic Districts: If you live in a "City of Richmond Old & Historic District," you may need approval from the Commission of Architectural Review (CAR) to remove healthy trees.

  • Chesapeake Bay Act (RPA): If you are within 100 feet of a water body, removal is heavily regulated.

We handle the compliance checks for you. As a local company, we know the regulations and will ensure your project is legal before we make the first cut.

The Cost of Tree Removal in Richmond, VA

Tree removal costs vary significantly based on risk and time.

Key Cost Factors:

  • Complexity: A tree leaning over a slate roof requires more time and rigging than a tree in an open field.

  • Condition: Dead, unstable trees are more dangerous to climb, often requiring a crane, which affects the price.

  • Access: Can we get equipment to the tree, or do we have to carry wood out by hand?

General Estimates:

  • Small Trees (Dogwoods/Crepe Myrtles): $300 – $600

  • Medium Trees (30–60 ft): $600 – $1,200

  • Large/Hazardous Trees: $1,500 – $3,000+

  • Crane-assisted removals for massive trees may run higher.

Why Choose Cambium Tree?

  • Certified Arborist Supervision: We ensure the tree is removed safely without damaging surrounding trees you want to keep.

  • Respect for Property: We use ground protection mats to prevent tire ruts in your grass.

  • Full Liability Insurance: Tree removal is high-risk. We carry comprehensive insurance to protect your home and assets during the operation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you remove a tree that is close to power lines?

If the tree is touching the main high-voltage lines (top of the pole), Dominion Energy usually handles the trimming. If it is the service drop (the line from the pole to your house), we can safely work around it, though we may ask for a temporary "line drop" for safety.

Does the price include stump removal?

Standard removal quotes typically include cutting the tree flush to the ground and hauling away the debris. Stump grinding is a separate line item, but we can bundle it into your quote for a discount.

Can I keep the wood?

Absolutely. If you have a wood stove or fire pit, let us know. We can cut the logs into manageable rounds (16–18 inches) and leave them for you to split, saving you money on the haul-away fee.
