As the Bon Air Historical Society records, Bon Air was originally developed as a resort and has since been designated a National Historic District, with many structures of Victorian design from the late 19th and early 20th century. Its name means “good air” — it was the getaway Richmonders came to for cool, fresh air, a relief from the stifling, dirty air of Richmond's industrial downtown in the late 1800s. The resort eventually became a village, and a village it remains.
